Five minutes into Wednesday’s game between Manchester City Legends and Premier League All-Stars, the home fans chanted “Steve Gerrard, Gerrard, he gave it to Demba Ba” even though he wasn’t playing.
The song is in obvious reference to when Gerrard slipped over during a game against Chelsea in 2014, a moment that cost Liverpool the Premier League title.
Fans across the country continue to troll Gerrard, but Liverpool supporters were left perplexed by the chants considering they came during Man City’s greatest ever player’s farewell match.
Vincent Kompany’s testimonial, a game where there’s a squad of City “legends” playing, and the first thing the City fans chant is about Steven Gerrard.
Couldn’t think of a better way to summarise them
As for the actual game, over 51,000 fans turned up at the Etihad to watch Kompany’s testimonial end in a 2-2 draw, but the Belgium defender was ruled out with a hamstring injury.
The Belgian defender poked fun at himself in his press conference ahead of kick-off.
“You might have noticed, I’m not playing – I just had to be injured for my own testimonial,” he said.
